“ADMIRAL 'Bull' HALSEY” - By Jack Pearl. Admiral William F. Halsey's professional naval career began when he was assigned to duty aboard the first battleship named USS Missouri. Forty-one years later that career reached its climax aboard another battleship named Missouri (BB-63). The occasion was the signing of the Japanese surrender treaty which ended the bloodiest war in history—World War II. Before the circle made its full sweep, an American saga of the sea was written, a saga that already became a legend in "Bull" Halsey's lifetime. As naval Commander of the South Pacific Area, Halsey's brilliant strategy and daring audacity with the Third Fleet in the battles for the Gilbert Islands, the Marshalls, Guadalcanal and his famous Battle of Leyte Gulf established his reputation as one of the greatest admirals the world has ever known. At the conclusion of World War II, Halsey was promoted to Fleet Admiral in December 1945, and retired from active duty in March 1947. The admiral died on August 20, 1959, at the age of 76. 1962 Paperback edition, 139 pages, no photos or index.
