“The DESTROYER KILLER” The True Story of Commander Sam Dealey and the Men of the Submarine Harder—Heroes of the Pacific in World War II. - By Edwin P. Hoyt. Foreword by Vice Admiral Ralph W. Christie, USN (Ret.). From the author of "Bowfin" and "Submarines At War." The true story of Commander Sam Dealey and the men of the submarine USS Harder (SS-257). Dealey earned the title ‘Destroyer Killer’ after sinking five Japanese destroyers during one of his many successful Pacific patrols. Dealey boldly attacked enemy destroyers using his “down the throat” tactic and found great success. On her third patrol Harder joined Snook (SS-279) and Pargo (SS-264) on a wild wolf pack mission. For his amazing achievements with Harder, Dealey was decorated with four Navy Crosses. In August 1944 Harder was lost with all hands––Commander Dealey was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. During his short but impressive career Dealey’s USS Harder sank 16 enemy ships totaling over 50,000 tons.
