Okinawa was the last campaign of World War II. In the Pacific, it was a bloody affair that convinced the United States that an invasion of Japan would prove so costly that deployment of atomic weapons was a sensible alternative. The US amphibious landings on Okinawa took place on Sunday, April 1, 1945 and the American's fought the Imperial Japanese Army in a fierce ground campaign until late June. Control of Okinawa was not easy as the Japanese were well dug in. Vigorous attacks by U.S. soldiers and marines, many using flame-thrower tanks cut through Japanese positions and eventually took charge of the island. At sea the Allied fleet battled the fanatical and dreaded kamikaze's who pressed their luck, sinking and damaged many American warships. By the time the fighting ended, US casualties of all kinds exceeded 70,000. In "Okinawa 1945" the author takes you back to this Pacific Island and through words, photographs and maps you'll learn how this battle was won. Photos from both sides of the conflict, including; land, air and sea.

OKINAWA 1945

                BOOK REVIEWS

"Okinawa 1945 by T. M. Huber is an authoritative and detailed recounting of the last campaign of World War II to take place in the Pacific Theatre. This was a battle so brutal that it convinced President Harry Truman to deploy atomic weapons in Japan as a preferable alternative to the utter bloodbath and the estimated hundreds of thousands of American deaths that a "D-Day" style invasion and conquest would bring. Black-and-white photographs embellish a wealth of details, all of which presented in a smooth narrative style. A superb study that makes history, in all its gritty reality, truly come alive, Okinawa 1945 is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II Military History reference collections and reading lists."
