“OPERATION BISMARCK SEA” By Lawrence Cortesi. Just before midnight on February 28, 1943,
the largest Japanese convoy formed since the invasion of the Philippines, steamed out of Rabaul, the
Imperial High Command’s stronghold in the South Pacific. On board were over 15,000 elite reinforcements
and tons of supplies of “Operation 157”––and capture of all of New Guinea, and with it Port Moresby,
gateway to the coveted prize of Australia. The following day a patrolling American B-24 bomber spotted the
fleet of warships and freighters in the Bismarck Sea and radioed its location to the 5th Air Force
Headquarters at Port Moresby. Thus began a battle of deadly strategies between two cunning adversaries:
General Ennis Whitehead, commander 5th Air Force who had no naval backup, and Admiral Masatomi
Kimura, the convoy commander who had heavy aerial support. This is the dramatic true story of that World
War II confrontation, told from both sides, and of the Allies’ “secret weapon” that sent Japan’s hopes for a
glorious conquest of Australia to a watery grave. 1977 Paperback. 231pages, 40 black and white photos, 2
maps, an appendix no index.
