“The RELUCTANT ADMIRAL” Yamamoto and the Imperial Navy. By Hiroyuki Agawa.
Isoroku Yamamoto was born in April 1884 and a graduate of the Imperial Japanese Navy Academy and a
student of America’s Harvard University. During World War II, Yamamoto was the commander-in-chief of
the combined Japanese Pacific Fleet. He was the master mind for several major Pacific battles including
the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and the battle for Midway Island in June of 1942. What few
know is the Admiral was superstitious, a womanizer and a passionate gambler. In his day as the leader
of the Japanese Navy, Yamamoto shook the world. Here in “The Reluctant Admiral” is a most
comprehensive and enlightening biography of this famous man. Admiral Yamamoto died during a routine
inspection of forward Japanese positions in the Solomon Islands in April 1943. American P-38 “Lightning”
fighter planes intercepted the Admiral’s aircraft, a Mitsubishi “Betty” bomber. His death was a major blow
to Japanese military morale during World War II. Here is the entire story of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.
