Australian writers David Jones and Peter Nunan have for the first time, told the complete story of the U.S. submarine task force based in Brisbane, Australia, during World War II. Highly secretive at the time, the submarines' activities remain little-known even today, although their contributions to the war effort in the Pacific were significant. This book details the force's sea and shoreside actions from the first S- boat's arrival in the dark days of April 1942 to the base's closure three years later. Some of the famed subs who are included in the book are; USS Wahoo (SS-238), USS Growler (SS-215) and USS Flying Fish (SS-229). Drawing on the personal experiences of individual sailors to give readers a dramatic picture of life at sea, including some heroic encounters with enemy and clandestine special missions, as well as training and leave activities. The authors also proudly record the professional cooperation and personal friendships that developed between the Australians and Americans. These details are then linked to the larger strategic picture of the war.
