"U-BOAT 977" By Heinz Schaeffer. Introduction by Nicholas Monsarrat. Heinz Schaeffer joined the German Navy in 1938 and became a submariner in May 1941. In December 1944, Schaeffer assumed command of the newly commissioned submarine U-977. Surviving the Battle of the Atlantic, Schaeffer eventually took U-977 into battle in April 1945. One month later, Germany surrendered and Schaeffer was ordered to surface and give-up. Instead of returning to Germany, the commander turned his U-boat and ran for the safety of South America. Using his Snorkel to keep out of site, U-977 arrived at Buenos Aires on August 17, 1945. Some of the Allies believed Hitler had escaped Germany aboard U-977. 1981 Paperback edition. 191 pages, 1 map, 2 U-boat diagrams with countless illustrations. No photos or index.
